What is a DS Game Adapter?
Within this section of the site, we will talk about the various game adapter cards available for the DS range.
The cards can be described in different ways all essentially meaning the same product type. So .. if you see an advert for a DS Flashcart, DS Flashcard, Game Adapter for the DSi, DSi Adapter etc … then you are talking about a card that is substituted for an official game cartridge, but which allows you to host multiple games, movies, music and other free games and software available via the internet to extend the way that you can use your DS.
The Nintendo DS range essentially splits into 2 categories :
- Nintendo Model with non-upgradable firmware (DS and DS Lite), and
- Nintendo Model WITH upgradable firmware (DSi and DS XL)
We have access to some cards for testing and will shortly be posting our reviews of those cards.
Things to note :
1. The Game Adapter cards do not usually work out of the box – they will require their own software ‘operating system’ also called firmware in order to work and you will typically need to download this. Installing the software is easy, finding it can be harder, but a good supplier will also point you in the direction of Firmware known to work for your card.
2. Cards are often copied by manufacturers in China and it can be difficult to assure that you have bought the 1st level manufactured card rather than a copy. Again a good reason to buy from a trusted retailer.
3. Cards that work today are not guaranteed to work in future should Nintendo upgrade the firmware in your DS to a version that does not support these flashcards (not a concern for DS and DS Lite Owners) . However, before Nintendo will apply an updated firmware (over WiFi), the user will be asked whether they wish to accept it. If you decline, then you will able to use your adapter card as before; however Nintendo may impose restrictions on your access to their Internet services if you opt not to apply firmware updates.
4. Cards that were designed ahead of the launch of the DSi/DS XL will not typically work in those machines. On the other hand, cards that were designed to work with the DSi and DS XL are backwards compatible with the DS and DS Lite.
Reliable UK Game Adapter Card Suppliers
R4i.co.uk and My Memory are our favoured companies as we have bought or tested cards from these merchants and found them to be reliable in terms of speed of delivery, authenticity of product and their ability to offer support to get up and running.
If you haven’t heard of R4i.co.uk, the company behind it is Memorybits. They have opted to run their Game Adapter operations on websites seperate to their other activities).
